The paper, so old and brittle it nearly cracks along the fold lines, is written over in black ink, and reads:

My love,

I’m not going to sell Improbable House after all, although my parents pressured me to do it. It’s heartbroken already, poor thing. Besides, what if I sold it, and then you did come home? You’d find me gone and the house gone and it would be almost as if our love had never been. I’m turning it over to a property rental service to take care of. I don’t like the man who runs it. His wife always seems to have a black eye or a broken rib or whatever from walking into doors. But he’s a good handyman, so everybody says. And he’s “island.” Being island (which I’m learning more and more that I am not and can never be) is everything here. You know how they are. If I lived in our house with you for the next twenty-five years, I might be accepted in the end. But not now. Not here on my own.

If you were with me, it wouldn’t matter what anybody thought.

But you are not island, either, not anymore. You are nowhere. And so I’ve arranged to rent out the house. I’m moving back to Spokane tomorrow. I’m leaving these letters for you, in our secret hidey-hole, in case you come back.

Please, come back.

I stand there, trying to read it again while the lines blur and cross and the dead stir restlessly in their graves. I know exactly who the property manager was that Nomi talked about in the letter, and the brutality he was capable of.
